Comical Attempt to Purchase Collabo.com or a Lesson in Collaboration?
The value in a domain name such as Collabo.com is no mystery, enterprise collaboration is a hot topic these days, especially when paired with social networking concepts and Web 2.0 technologies. Collabo is also popular slang within the music industry, so I do entertain offers to purchase the domain on occasion. However there are ways to do things, and of course ways not to, especially when trying to negotiate a good price. A recent attempt to purchase Collabo.com I thought was rather comical, so I thought I’d share it with everyone.
Initial Email…
I am contacting you through my personal email account but for business reasons such that I do not have to disclose my company’s identity. I would like to ask if you are offering the domain ‘collabo.com’ for sale? I have not discussed this at all with my company’s leadership, but I suspect they may be interested if the price is nominal.
Please let me know, and thanks.

I’m assuming it’s one of those unless you have a 4th job. You are welcome to make an offer, wouldn’t be the first.

Sorry for the slow response. Actually that is me, so well done on the detective work, but as it happens this is in relation to some advising I’m doing for another company. A lot of hats to be wearing.
Cute little blog that’s been set up at collabo.com since I last checked in. Appears unlikely that a sale will be of interest to you at this point. If this is not the case, please let me know your price.
Best of luck with the blog.

Thanks for the confirmation, unnecessary though. If you want to remain confidential I suggest not using an email address that has your name and a handle you use attached to it, which relates content you’ve plastered all over the Internet. Also statements such as “I do not have to disclose my company’s identity” in your introductory email are not the best way to get on someone’s good side, especially when you are looking for a good price on something. Something along the lines of “I rather not disclose my company’s identity at this time” makes you sound more professional, instead of juvenile. Obviously marketing isn’t your thing though, so you can just throw that hat away.
It isn’t likely that your company will make an offer within the range I would sell this domain for, I’ve grown quite attached to my cute little blog over the past week, however everything does have a price so you are still welcome to make an offer.

My sarcasm did get the better of me in these replies but I don’t think anyone appreciates a condescending tone, especially from someone who is looking for you to do something for them. A little professionalism with your peers goes a long way, and that is something we should also remember when collaborating!
